Photo & Video Contest

Each year the International Education and Study Away office holds a contest for students who studied away during the previous year. Students are emailed to enter the contest the fall after they return.

Announcing our 2018 Study Away Photo Contest WINNERS!

Angela Chan: This is a photo of me this summer on top of Whistler, BC, on a day hike. Whistler is one of my favourite places and close to my hometown of Vancouver, BC. I chose this photo because it highlights the great outdoors and the gorgeous natural scenery that makes Canada’s west coast one of a kind.

Alison Wong: Yale-NUS College in Singapore: Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Singapore. This image was taken during the 2018 Chinese New Year celebration with dragon dance performance. It was the first time I participated in the New Year’s celebration outside of the United States. It was really amazing to experience how people in other countries celebrated the same holiday in different (but also similar) ways. The performance invoked a sense of nostalgia for me as the vibrant-colored dragon, dance, music, and engagement with the audience was consistent with the ones I watched back home in California. Despite being many miles away from home, I had a sense of familiarity with one aspect of Chinese Singaporean culture. Within the temple, I used incense for prayers and even got to bath a statue of Buddha with a wood ladle for the first time.

Ahmed Al Khalayleh: CIEE Intensive Chinese Language and Culture in Nanjing, China. A Xi’an local making rice candy on the bustling streets of the Muslim Quarter, Xi’an, home to the largest mosque in China.

Samuel Grunebaum: IFSA Buenos Aires in Argentina. This panorama was taken after a long day adventuring in the small town of Purmamarca, Jujuy. Located in the far North of Argentina near the Chilean and Bolivian borders, Purmamarca is very far removed from the concrete jungle of Buenos Aires. In Purmamarca, I ate empanadas salteñas (little salty ones, sometimes made with llama) and hiked on dusty trails that were not really trails – they were meandering paths through multicolored hills. Near this path – El paseo de los colorados – watched a soccer scrimmage on a red dirt pitch beneath a mountain that was at once green, red, yellow, and purple.
